Deleting the Apps and Getting Your Brain Back
I used to average thirteen to fifteen hours of screen time. That is not living. That is being farmed.
A few months ago I deleted Instagram, TikTok, and X from my phone. I kept the accounts but the apps were gone. I only checked from a desktop when I needed to. Within two weeks the difference was obvious. Brain felt light. Dopamine pathways started resetting. The constant low grade anxiety and doom scrolling disappeared. I locked back into real life.

This is not a productivity hack. This is basic nervous system hygiene. The apps are designed to keep you scrolling. Every notification is a little hit. Over time your baseline for what feels normal rises until ordinary life feels boring. That is the trap.
I have done versions of this multiple times. Every time the pattern is the same. The first few days feel restless. Then the quiet arrives. You start noticing the actual day again. Conversations get better. Work gets deeper. Sleep improves. The urge to check constantly fades.
The studies line up with what I felt. Heavy social media use correlates with higher anxiety, lower attention, and worse sleep. Cutting it produces measurable improvements in all three. You do not need a study to feel it. Just delete the apps for two weeks and pay attention.
Practical version that actually sticks. Delete the apps from the phone. Leave the accounts alive so you do not feel like you are losing something permanent. If you need to post or check something, do it from a computer. That friction alone cuts usage by 80 percent or more. Turn off all non essential notifications. Charge the phone outside the bedroom. Give the morning to real life before any screen.
I still use X for work and for sharing what I learn. But I refuse to let it live in my pocket all day. The difference between intentional use and compulsive use is everything.
If you have been feeling foggy, reactive, or like your attention is broken, this is one of the highest return changes you can make. Two weeks is enough to feel the shift. Thirty days is enough to make it stick. The matrix will still be there when you decide to log back in. It does not need you every minute of every day.
